P52 Clicks January Technique: Low-Light || Raleigh, NC Photographer

If you follow me on social media, you probably already know that in January I decided to join a weekly challenge group called “p52 clicks” (@p52clicks on Instagram).  Each month, the group announces a specific theme.  The themes are all based on technical skills related to photography.  For each month’s weekly challenge, members of the group are encouraged to practice and grow their skills in the specified theme/skill.  Then we post our images to the group Facebook page for feedback.  January’s theme was low-light, so for the entire month of January, we spent our free time practicing photographing in spaces and situations where light was limited.  I already had some experience with this since I photograph newborns in-home and light can be limited depending on the house, time of day, etc.  Even still, I was really excited to practice this skill!  You see, light is the key to a good image…if the light isn’t interesting, it can be hard to make the image interesting.  Purposefully creating images with little light forced me to stretch how I think about light – how I use it to tell a story through my work.  I shared a few of my images in a weekly loop on Instagram, but thought I’d share all of them here.  I chose to base the majority of my photographs on my own life (my son, really).  I did explore a bit outside of my daily life (you’ll see that with the images taken in our wood shop and images of the Orlando Eye ferris wheel).  I also applied the technique in a newborn session I did a few weeks ago.  The room we were shooting is was actually very bright, but I chose to dim quite a bit of the light and photograph with less light on purpose.  I love how the images turned out.  I hope you enjoy these as you scroll though!
